Sacred Heart Hospital

  INDUSTRY: Hospitals
  SERVICE AREA(S): Scheduling/Project Controls

As part of a ten-year master planning effort, DRAPER & ASSOCIATES is currently providing Construction Management and Scheduling services for the multi-phase construction and renovation of Sacred Heart Women's & Children's Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. A key component of this comprehensive upgrade included the Children's Hospital project, which was defined in three phases:

  • Phase I - Construction of Hospital Laundry -- construction of a 23,000 sq. ft., one story concrete structure to house the hospital's new laundry facility.

  • Phase II and III - Construction of the Atrium, Children's Hospital, Kitchen and Dining Facility -- a continuation of the concrete structure built on top of Phase I.

A three story steel framed Atrium with skylights defines the entrance. In addition to the Atrium, light courts have been incorporated throughout the structure to provide light to interior areas. An exterior roof top play area was designed at the third level.

The 141,000 sq. ft. Children's Hospital features three Delivery Rooms as well as 19 Labor and Delivery Suites. A state-of-the-art Nursery consisting of Level 1, 2 and 3 nurseries is located on the second floor. Patient rooms make up the balance of the second and third floors. The new kitchen and dining facility is located on the first floor.

The project presented two specific project management challenges for Draper & Associates to consider:

  • New construction tied into existing, operational facilities
  • Reuse of existing equipment required critical coordination

Draper & Associates provided both construction schedule development and construction monitoring services during all phases of the project. Draper & Associates conducted bi-weekly update meetings during the construction phase, reviewing progress with the Owner, General Contractor, and all active Subcontractors. Near Term Schedules, detailed day-to-day implementation schedules derived from the Overall Project Schedule, served as the focal point of discussion during the update meetings.

Other supporting tools included the Action Item Agenda, which tracked key decisions and actions; the Trend Analysis Chart, which projected the impact of current progress on overall project completion; and the Material Status Log, which identified the status of key materials.
